J150 ESC Motor Mismatch Error [28-005]

In this article we will cover how to solve for this error.

 1. Overview

This SOP describes how to diagnose and resolve Error 28-005 (Motor Mismatch) on a J150 drone. The error occurs when a new motor ESC  is installed and the firmware does not match with the existing firmware on the drone. Following this procedure restores the correct firmware match on all four motors.

2. Identification — Check Module Info

Before applying the fix, confirm this is the cause by checking the module info for all four motors:

  • Standard J150 motor ESCs should report an ID beginning with C07xxxxx.
  • An ID beginning with C01xxxx confirms the mismatch.
  • Always power off both the main battery and internal battery for reboots — a partial power cycle may not clear the mismatch.
  • Confirm module info at both checkpoints (Step 0 identification and Step 4) to verify the fix took effect before downgrading firmware.
  • If after this procedure any motor still reports C01xxxx, treat this as a hardware issue (wrong ESC installed) and escalate for physical ESC replacement rather than repeating the firmware cycle.

If one or more motors show a C01xxxx identifier instead of C07xxxxx, proceed with the resolution steps below.

4. Resolution Steps

Step 1: Upgrade the UAV firmware

Update the drone's UAV firmware to version 6.4.34.

Step 2: Fully power down the drone

Reboot the system by turning off both the main battery and the internal (backup) battery. Both power sources must be switched off for a complete reboot.

Step 3: Restart the drone

Power the drone back on and allow it to fully boot up.

Step 4: Re-check module info

Check the module info again for all four motors. At this point, all four should report the C07xxx identifier, confirming the ESC firmware is now correctly recognized.

Step 5: Downgrade firmware to original version

Downgrade the UAV firmware back to the original version that was in use prior to Step 1.

Step 6: Reboot again

Perform another full reboot (power off both main and internal batteries, then power back on) to complete the process.

5. Expected Outcome

After completing all steps, the Error 28-005 motor mismatch condition should be resolved, with all four motor ESCs reporting the correct C07xxx module identifiers.
