Radar Issues-Terrain Following Mid-Flight

The user has had no crash or previous problems with the drone radar and terrain following, but now one or both of them is acting up. The drones seem to be very unstable in flight or jumping around a lot.

Cause:

  1. Firmware bug
  2. Damaged downward radar or omnidirectional radar
    1. Could be the actual radar or the signal cables leading to it.
  3. The Aerial Electronics module is damaged.

Diagnosing:

  1. Look to make sure there is no damaged part on the radar or the cables leading to and from the radar.
  2. Reduce flight speeds to see if issue persists
  3. Very no issues with terrain type

Solutions:

  1. Power cycle the drone and the remote.
    1. Most of the time this will solve the issue
  2. Downgrade the firmware on the drone then re-upgrade.
  3. Replacing the radar or downward vision radar.
    1. If the drone is having problems following the terrain correctly it will be the downward vision radar.
    2. If the drone appears to be seeing ghost objects that trigger obstacle avoidance then it is the radar.
  4. Replacing aerial electronics.

Conclusion:

Most of the time when this happens the drone needs to either have a power cycle or you need to downgrade firmware. This is especially good to do first if the drone has been flying fine for most of the day or the day before. If the drone is seeing ghost objects and triggering obstacle avoidance then replace the radar. If the drone is not flying straight and flying all over the place, change out the aerial electronics, then try the downward radar. The radar on the T40s rarely just go bad, even in the case of a wreck.
