Install Three-Phase Wire Clip on Aircraft

This SOP outlines the safe, step-by-step process for installing the three-phase wire clip, including bracket installation, ESC reinstallation, and foam cover modification. Follow these steps to ensure proper fitment, secure fastening, and protection of wiring and components.

Key Steps

1. Power Down and Prepare the Work Area 0:01

  • Confirm the external power source is off or fully removed before beginning.
  • This prevents damage to the aircraft and reduces the risk of injury.
  • Gather the required tools before starting the disassembly process.

2. Remove the Foam Cover 0:21

  • Use a 2.5 mm bit to remove the foam cover screws.
  • Set the screws aside in a safe location for reinstallation.
  • Lift off the foam cover and inspect the area for access to the ESC and mounting hardware.

3. Loosen and Remove the ESC 0:45

  • Use a 3 mm bit to loosen the ESC.
  • Remove the four bolts total: two on the top and two on the bottom.
  • Carefully move the ESC out of the way without stressing the wiring.

4. Remove the Motor Mount Screws and Install the Rear Bracket 1:09

  • Use a 5 mm bit to remove the two inside screws from the bottom of the motor mount.
  • Insert the rear bracket into position.
  • Push the ESC back slightly to help hold the bracket in place while reinstalling the screws.
  • Apply a small amount of blue threadlocker to the screw threads before reinstalling.
  • Tighten the screws securely to complete the rear bracket installation.

5. Reinstall the ESC with Proper Foam Support 1:41

  • Reposition the ESC back into place after the rear bracket is secured.
  • Before tightening, confirm there are two pieces of foam behind the ESC to help ensure the connection seats fully.
  • Reinstall the ESC using the 3 mm bolts.
  • Verify the ESC is fully seated and secured before moving to the next step.

6. Install the Front Bracket and Check Wire Clearance 2:35

  • Use a 3 mm bit and M4 x 6 screws to install the front bracket.
  • Align the alignment tabs on the bracket and mating surface before fully seating it.
  • Tighten the top screw first, then inspect for any pinched wires.
  • Adjust the bracket position as needed so wires sit cleanly in the notch and are not trapped between guide surfaces.
  • Fully secure the bracket once proper alignment and clearance are confirmed.

7. Modify the Foam Cover for Bracket Clearance 4:28

  • Reinstalling the foam cover requires trimming the internal ridge that interferes with the ESC side.
  • Use a utility knife, box cutter, or foam cutter to remove the ridge.
  • Cut only the side that aligns with the ESC.
  • Work carefully, as the foam may be hot and can stick to skin after cutting.

8. Reinstall the Foam Cover and Finalize Assembly 5:51

  • Slide the foam cover back into place.
  • Confirm that all holes line up correctly before fastening.
  • Reinstall the foam cover screws using the 2.5 mm bit.
  • Perform a final visual check to ensure the cover is seated properly and all components are secure.

Cautionary Notes

  • Always disconnect or turn off external power before starting work.
  • Use caution when handling the ESC and wiring to avoid damage.
  • Apply only a small amount of blue threadlocker to screw threads.
  • Before fully tightening the front bracket, check for pinched wires.
  • When cutting foam, wear gloves if available or handle carefully because the foam may be hot and can stick to skin.
  • Ensure all alignment tabs are properly seated before final tightening.

Tips for Efficiency

  • Gather all required tools and screws before beginning to reduce downtime.
  • Keep removed hardware organized by step to simplify reassembly.
  • Use the ESC position to help hold the rear bracket in place during screw installation.
  • Check wire routing before final tightening to avoid having to disassemble and correct pinched wires later.
  • Test-fit the foam cover before reinstalling screws to confirm the cut is correct.
