J100 Wiring Harness Update

The intent of this article is to act as a central repository for all info associated with J100 wiring harnesses.

Overview:

During production, a subpar wiring harness was used. Some of these bullet connectors were even further faulty, resulting in the need for immediate grounding and connector replacement (those dealers and customers have been contacted (April), and that specific situation is resolved).

EAVision has provided updated wiring harnesses to be installed on current J100 units in the United States. We are encouraging dealers to replace existing wiring harnesses with the updated, higher-quality version (see update instructions below). We have also (just last week) been made aware of a specific protocol that should be followed for further securing  wiring harnesses, in an effort to further reduce vibrations and ensure components aren’t jostling around unnecessarily.

Key takeaways:

  1. Wiring harness identification guide
    1. Not every wire harness needs to be replaced. Some of these drones and most of the ones that we got in recently should have the new style on at least some of the arms. You can tell without taking the harness apart. Here's a video for that (pro tips: you can see and feel the bump + there should be NO exposed wire between the bullet connector and the insulation of the wire).  https://photos.app.goo.gl/2XhVCPZ2Ne6nbQZXA
  2. Even if the drone has a new style wiring harness, it should still be secured properly using the SOP that EAV has sent. This includes pumping in a bit of electrically conductive grease into the bullet connectors. This conductive grease might not be locally available, but you can find the full SOP with those additional options here.
  3. This grease may actually be a crucial step in the process. It will increase conductivity which seems to be decreased if there is excessive vibration leading to a buildup of heat and wires breaking.
  4. The drones currently in Chicago and the next 400 after that (currently in China) will all have new everything, including the cables fastened with the new SOP.
  5. EAV is very confident in this being the solution. You can find test results in the video in this doc
  6. EAV will be sending us molded plastic clips for standardizing the fastening of these cables. We have printed some and tested them and they work (when attached correctly).

If none of these are available then you can use copper anti seize lubricant, that you will likely be able to find at that auto parts or hardware store. Make sure it is copper anti seize as regular anti seize will not conduct electricity.

Full Video of Wiring Harness Replacement & SOP for Securing

Watch the video below for instructions on swapping out wiring harnesses on the EAVision J100 for the upgraded version (this video includes the SOP for further securing wiring harnesses).

Important to note:

      1. Dealers have received these upgraded wiring harnesses, and are the primary point of contact for installation (these are expected to begin arriving over the weekend of 5/24)
      2. EAVision is reimbursing labor for making this upgrade ($100/drone). Users who make these upgrades (whether dealers or end-users) need to complete this form to be eligible for reimbursement -- IMPORTANT: photos showing upgraded harnesses properly installed on each arm are required to be eligible for reimbursement)

    FAQs:

    • Q: How much grease can I expect to use per drone?
      • A: Approximately 6mls/drone
    • Q: I already replaced wiring harnesses on my customers’ drones, do I need to go in and further secure the harnesses as per this SOP?
      • A: We do highly recommend dealers to further secure harnesses per EAV’s SOP. We also understand that end-users are in the field, and it’s a difficult time to pause operations. If unable to make the wrapping update, you should ensure the drone(s) are corrected to the SOP by EAVision, the next time your customers’ drone(s) are in the shop for any repair.
    • Q: Will I be reimbursed for purchasing these materials?
    • Q: How much time am I going to be reimbursed for and how much per hour?
      • A: Labor will be reimbursed at $100 per drone for the installing the updated wiring harnesses. Remember to complete this form
    • Q: I already replaced wiring harnesses on my customers’ drones, is a crash pertaining to this issue under warranty, in the event I’m unable to secure the wrap?
      • A: Yes, this would be covered under warranty.
    • Q: How do I know that I have done the SOP correctly?
      • A: Cross-reference our installation video + EAVision’s SOP for further securing the wiring harness.
    • Q: Who is assuming the risk for making these changes - me (Dealer), Agri Spray Drones, or EAVision?
    • Q: What is our confidence level that the next drones I get do not have the same problems that are going to encounter so much time to be repaired?
      • A: We've been flying one drone pretty continuously just spraying one field. By the end of day on Friday, 5/31, that drone has over 2,000 acres on it in the past 2 weeks. It has experienced no major issues.
