Storage and Winterization of J150, J100, and J70 Batteries
Guidance for storing flight batteries during the off-season and returning them to service
Lithium flight batteries store a large amount of energy. A damaged or defective pack can overheat, vent, or catch fire, and storage damage is often not visible. Follow the EAVision manual and your local fire and safety codes. The owner or operator is responsible for the storage location and for how packs are stored.
For storage longer than a few days, keep each pack between 40% and 60% charge. Do not store a pack fully discharged, because over-discharge can permanently damage cells and the pack may not recover. Do not store it at 100%. Read the level on the battery’s own display after the pack has rested. Check stored packs monthly and keep a log of pack ID, date, and charge level. If a pack has dropped below 40%, bring it back into range, then disconnect it from the charger. Never leave a stored pack on the charger. If a pack will not charge, do not force-charge it or bypass any protection. Set it aside and contact ASD support and reference your EAVision manual.
Store packs in a fire-resistant lithium battery storage cabinet or safe designed for large lithium batteries. Locate it away from living areas, fuel, and other flammable materials, ideally in a detached building or an area separated from occupied spaces. Store batteries between 10°C and 25°C (50°F to 77°F), in a dry area, out of direct sunlight, and away from heat sources such as vehicle cabs, furnaces, open flames, and generator exhaust. Install smoke or heat detection in the storage area, ideally monitored or connected to an alarm you can hear from where you work and sleep. Keep the following within easy reach, but outside the storage area:
- An extinguisher rated for lithium-ion battery fires, or a large supply of water, plus an ABC extinguisher for surrounding fires
- A fire blanket
- A bucket of dry sand
Keep packs disconnected from the aircraft, upright on a flat, level surface, away from sharp objects and loose metal, and out of reach of children. Do not stack anything on a pack, and do not sit or step on one.
Never charge a cold pack. Allow packs to reach room temperature, ideally sealed in their case, before charging or connecting them. For storage purposes, charge only within the charging temperature range between 10°C and 25°C (50°F to 77°F). Charge packs only while you are present and nearby, on a non-combustible surface, away from flammable materials.
Before returning a pack to service, inspect it. Do not use or charge a pack that is swollen, leaking, or damaged. Set it aside and contact ASD support. If it looks normal, charge it slowly (3000 watts) and confirm it remains cool and charges to above 95% before the first flight.
If a pack tips over, is damaged, or becomes hot, swollen, or starts smoking, do not touch it. Move away and keep people and animals clear. If it is safe to do so, isolate it in an open area away from anything combustible. If it ignites, evacuate and call emergency services immediately. Do not attempt to fight a battery fire unless you are trained and it is safe. Monitor any damaged pack for heat, swelling, or smoke for at least 24 hours, and never charge or fly it. Contact ASD support.
Store the cooling charger with the same care. Disconnect the battery cable and power cord when it is not in use, and keep it out of sunlight, rain, and humidity, and away from heat, high-voltage sources, corrosives, and flammable gases. Clean the cooling holes and check the power module for dust before returning it to service.
